As the 2019 edition of Art Basel in Hong Kongare delighted to share the highlights of Kabinett and Encounters sectors.
This year’s Kabinett presents 21 carefully-curated concepts, inviting young and seasoned art audience alike to rediscover the artworld’s influential characters and unsung heroes from across time and continents. Do not miss works by one of the founders of Korean abstraction Yoo Youngkuk (Kukje Gallery), who uses intense colors to create graphic compositions based on nature; and Pacita Abad’s (Silverlens) signature ‘trapunto’ textile paintings, inspired by the artist’s peripatetic experiences in Sudan, Bangladesh, the US, and the Philippines.
Brought together under the theme Still We Rise, the 12 unique environments in Encounters (supported by MGM Resorts Art & Culture) inspire to reenergize, innovate and rise up amidst the unpredictability of our times. Lee Bul’s Willing To Be Vulnerable – Metalized Balloon (Galerie Thaddaeus Ropac, Lehmann Maupin and PKM Gallery) is a site-specific version of an existing work influenced equally by utopian aspirations and failures. Making its debut at our show, Jose Dávila’s interactive Homage to the Square (Sean Kelly) is part of an ongoing series that explores Josef Albers’ renowned theories of color, through kinetic mobile sculptures that are constantly in motion.
